Sheriff Anthony Cline announced today that he has selected Hody Viars to serve as Chief Deputy of the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Deputy Viars brings extensive law enforcement experience, advanced education, and specialized training to the agency.
“Hody Viars brings his experience and education to the agency with a dedication to serve both the office and the citizens of Wythe County,” said Sheriff Cline. “He is calm under pressure, thoughtful in his decisions, and will be a great fit leading our team in keeping the community safe.”
Chief Deputy Viars began his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office in 2014. He later joined the Virginia State Police, serving as a Trooper and currently as a Special Agent in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. In his current role, Viars has gained specialized expertise as a certified Bomb Technician, Arson Investigator, LEICA Operator, and Gang Specialist.
His professional credentials include:
- Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Radford University
- Extensive specialty training in bomb and arson investigations, gang enforcement, and critical incident response
- Membership in multiple professional law enforcement organizations, including the Virginia Gang Investigators Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators
Sheriff Cline emphasized that Chief Deputy Viars’ leadership and specialized skills will strengthen the office’s ability to protect the community and support its deputies in daily operations.
